Full Color Relief Printing from HIPS: AA241 Printshop

by Beauvais Lyons and Tatiana Potts

This course will introduce color relief printing from high impact polystyrene (HIPs). HIPS is an affordable, commonly available sheet plastic that can be engraved with a burin or engraving rake. It has tremendous application for both relief and intaglio printing. For this workshop the principles of engraving will be presented, and during the first 90-minutes of the class workshop participants will create an engraved plate exploring the mark-making potential of the medium. The resulting plates will be combined and printed in yellow, magenta and cyan to create a set of collaborative, layered, abstract compositions. This workshop is for people who love color, and are open to working on a dynamic, group project together. Each participant will leave with at least two of the collaborative, variable edition (22 x 15 inch) prints. All supplies will be provided.
