West Region Spring Conference

Join your fellow art educators and delve into Art That Builds Community. Attendees will participate in all four rotations, centering around the theme of building community. To help prepare us for implementing the new state standards, each rotation will focus on ONE DOMAIN, with specific examples of how to implement them in ALL CLASSROOMS. 

Richard Lou was born in San Diego, CA and raised in San Diego and Tijuana, BCN, MX. He has over 20 years of teaching experience in higher education, over 15 years of arts administration experience, has curated over 30 exhibitions, and continues to produce and exhibit art while teaching and chairing the Department of Art at the University of Memphis. Richard will be reading from an unpublished essay regarding a border project that he participated in back in 1990. As a member of the Border Arts Workshop/Taller de Arte Fronterizo they built over 25 large scale 1/4 inch steel staples and sutured our countries together from the mouth of the Rio Bravo back to the Pacific Ocean.

- During this breakout session, Gulcan and Christan will speak about T.A.G., a community outreach program launched in 2017 by the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, and one of their most successful teen lessons from 2017: paper marbling! Each participant will get hands on experience creating a beautiful work of art using paper, water, acrylic paint, ox gall, and carrageenan. During this session, educators will learn a fun and engaging ways to implement the CREATE domain in their own classrooms!

MELISSA CROWN MORRIS, “ANALYZE THIS”– Melissa Crown Morris is a Visual Arts Specialist at South Park Elementary.  Mel has worked as a content developer and presenter for the Art of Ed and has presented workshops at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens. Additionally, she is a published author in her field and is currently helping rewrite curriculum within her district.  In this breakout workshop, resources and techniques will be explored so that your students will be able to analyze, interpret, and PRESENT artworks.

AMANDA TUTOR, “OFF THE BEATEN PATH”- Memphian Amanda Tutor is a working artist and teaches Visual Art at Bartlett's Ninth Grade Academy and Art History at Bartlett High School. Amanda likes to make things, and make things happen! She presented at NAEA 2017 and will present at NAEA 2018 in March. Mrs. Tutor was selected Art Teacher of the Year for West TN for 2017.  This breakout session will point out community resources right under your nose for enhancing your curriculum, as well as provide you with materials you can use on MONDAY for a great RESPOND lesson!!!

AMANDA GALBRAITH, “DRAWING CHALLENGES TO INSPIRE LEARNING”- Be ready to sketch, compete against the clock, laugh, and build community through a game-inspired drawing challenge. The content in this session will inspire participants to generate concepts and create unique drawings inspired by current interests and surroundings. We will also brainstorm ideas and strategies for adapting this activity for classroom application to inspire learning in the CONNECT domain.

Please arrive by 8:15am, so you can check-in and enjoy a light breakfast. We will begin promptly at 8:30am. 

PARKING: The University of Memphis has generously provided parking passes to all attendees in the gated parking structure on Innovation Drive. The parking structure is located off Central behind the Communications and Fine Art Building (where our conference will be held).

During the lunch break, supplies will be available for attendees to participate in the regional phenomenon, 901 Rocks!

COST: $45 Non-Members, $40 Members, $35 High Education Students

FOOD: A light breakfast will be available and lunch will be provided.

Scholarship Opportunity

ArtsMemphis has generously provided the funds for 20 scholarships for Memphis-area, public school art teachers to attend the conference for free. The scholarship covers all conference fees and lunch. PLEASE NOTE : if a teacher received one of the scholarships that we offered to the TAEA State Conference, they are not eligible for this scholarship.

The applications are due to Kathy Dumlao at kathy.dumlao@brooksmuseum.org  by Monday, February 26 , and will then be reviewed by a panel from the TAEA board. Teachers will be notified by March 16 if their scholarship has been approved.

A follow-up email will be sent to you from a member of the West Tennessee Art Education Association Staff the week before the conference to confirm. 

During registration, you will also choose your lunch options. Lunch is provided by Holiday Deli. During registration you will be asked to choose your bread, meat, chip, and cookie options. There is also a gluten free option.  

The registration fee includes hands-on workshops relevant to ALL GRADE LEVELS, door prizes, supplies, and lunch. All attendees are encouraged to participate in an Art Materials Swap. Bring any art items you'd like to donate. This could be any extra teaching materials/supplies you don't use or need anymore. This can include extra paper, crayons, markers, posters, pens, pencils, magazines, books, etc. Make sure the materials are in good condition. Whatever is left over will be donated to a classroom in need.
